National development agency which aims to improve basic skills. Its activities include funding research and demonstration projects, publishing teaching and learning resources, and running a free national telephone referral service to help adults join basic skills classes.

ECDL: European Computer Driving Licence
Details of a European-wide qualification which enables people to demonstrate their competence in computer skills. It aims to raise the general level of competency in IT, to improve productivity at work, to enable employers to invest more efficiently in IT, and to ensure that best practice and quality issues are understood and implemented. The full syllabus is available online and includes modules in using the computer and managing files, word processing, spreadsheets, databases / filing systems, presentation and drawing, information network services.
