Promising to reveal 'everything you always wanted to know about the Dewey Decimal Classification system but were afraid to ask', the guardians and publishers of DDC relate the popular library classification system to current events, share news, puzzles, comments and crosswords and answer FAQs. Cataloguing in Special Libraries in the 1990s
Results of a survey into cataloguing methods in special libraries. Concludes that the cataloguing needs of the special libraries surveyed in this study are characterised by their diversity as shown by the predominant use of locally developed codes and the perceived lack of utility of cooperative schemes. The majority of librarians create quite brief records, in most cases shorter than the simplest level of description in AACR2.

Guidelines for Alphabetical Arrangement of Letters and Sorting of Numerals and Other Symbols
This technical report provides rules for the alphabetical arrangement of headings in lists of all kinds, such as bibliographies, indexes, dictionaries, directories, and inventories. It also covers the sorting of Arabic or Roman numbers, and other symbols. Seven rules are given to cover problems which may arise in alphanumeric arrangements of headings, but the report does not address issues concerning the meaning or type of headings. Guidelines for Indexes and Related Information Retrieval Devices
Provides guidelines for the content, organisation, and presentation of indexes used for the retrieval of parts of, and entire, documents. It deals with the principles of indexing, regardless of the type of material, the method used (intellectual analysis, machine algorithm, or both), the medium of the index, or the method of presentation for searching. It emphasises three processes essential for all indexes; comprehensive design, vocabulary management, and the provision of syntax. HMC Survey of Archive Cataloguing Problems

Human Creation of Abstracts with Selected Computer Assistance Tools
After introductory training, a research assistant used the TEXNET abstracting assistance software to create abstracts to articles available via the World Wide Web. The assistant also compiled introductory documentation, including a guide to abstracting using computer assistance tools. The article discusses problems encountered, tools selected for preferred use, and implications for future software development.

Scheme designed to classify and categorise the literature of physics and astronomy for materials such as journal subject indexes, catalogues, computerised databases, online journals, CD-ROM versions of journals, and any other collection of physics and astronomy resources. SICI: Serial Item and Contribution Identifier Standard
