Abstract
This article is the second one in a series of two. It shows how
it is not possible to convert the catalogues in an average
library by using traditional technical process. Some of the
necessary actions to be taken before the start of the project
are listed. Three spheres of action are identified within the
project: system installation and parametrization, database input
and indexation of the entered records. Alternative strategies
of action are proposed. Different alternatives are technically
and economically compared. The characteristics of the human
resources required are analyzed and productivity standards are
provided. Finally, the quality control procedures to be adopted
are indicated.
Resumen
El presente articulo es el segundo de una serie de dos. Se
demuestra, que siguiendo procedimientos tradicionales de
procesos tecnicos, no es posible asumir la conversion de
catalogos de una biblioteca media. Se enumeran algunas acciones
previas al inicio del proyecto. Dentro del proyecto se
identifican tres areas de accion: instalacion y definicion del
sistema, poblamiento de la base de datos e indizacion de los
registros cargados. Se proponen estrategias de accion
alternativas. Se comparan tecnica y economicamente las
alternativas propuestas. Se analizan las caracteristicas de los
recursos humanos requeridos y se entregan indicadores de
productividad. Finalmente se senialan los procedimientos de
control de calidad que debieran implementarse.

Abstract
ISIS-CERTO is presented, a data entry system with validation for
the MicroISIS database. The principal characteristics of the two
modules that constitute it are described: validation setup and
data entry. The validations of each worksheet of a database are
defined through the setup module and they will be verified
during the data entry. The system was developed in the
ISIS-Pascal language, it has an user-friendly interface and is
multilingual. It is distributed in three languages: Portuguese,
Spanish and English.
Resumen
Se presenta el ISIS-CERTO, sistema de entrada de datos con
validacion para bases de datos MicroISIS. Se describen las
principales caracteristicas de los dos modulos que componen el
sistema: configuracion de validaciones y entrada de datos. A
traves del modulo de configuracion se definen las validaciones
de cada hoja de trabajo de una base de datos que seran
verificadas en la entrada de datos. El sistema fue desarrollado
en el lenguaje ISIS-Pascal, tiene una interfaz amigable y es
multilingue, siendo distribuido en tres idiomas: portugues,
espaniol e ingles.

Abstract
After nearly fourteen years of designing and implementing
textual databases such as STAIRS-CMS - IBM in mainframes and
MicroISIS - UNESCO - in PC environments for nearly ten years, and
of having investigated and worked on relational and textual
databases, we have found that the question most frequently asked
among computer science specialists when implementing a
documental database is: Why MicroISIS and not a relational
database management system? - such as: SQL, DB2, dBASE,
Progress, Fox -. The answer is that many computer science
specialists do not know what a textual database management system is.
This paper aims at showing how both systems work, the advantages
and inconveniences in each case, the philosophy behind textual
databases versus the relational model. It will show why the
relational model is not adequate for the necessary type of
search in a documental database; even though some relational
systems have included functions such as word indexes, these do
not solve specific problems about queries put to a documental
system, such as the case of adjacent words.
Resumen
Luego de casi catorce anios de diseniar e implementar bases de
datos textuales con STAIRS-CMS - IBM - en mainframes y desde
hace diez anios con MicroISIS - UNESCO - en ambiente PC, y de
haber investigado y trabajado en bases de datos relacionales y
textuales, hemos encontrado que la pregunta que mas se repite
entre los informaticos al momento de implementar una base de
datos documental es: ?Por que MicroIsis y no un sistema
manejador de bases de datos relacional? - por ejemplo: SQL, DB2,
dBase, Progress, Fox -. La respuesta es que muchos
informaticos no conocen lo que es un sistema manejador de bases
de datos textuales.
En este trabajo se pretende mostrar el funcionamiento de ambos
sistemas, sus ventajas e inconvenientes en cada caso, la
filosofia de las bases de datos textuales versus el modelo
relacional. Se mostrara por que el modelo relacional no es
adecuado para el tipo de busquedas necesario en una base de
datos documental; aun cuando algunos sistemas relacionales han
incorporado funciones como los indices por palabras, estos
todavia no permiten resolver problemas especificos de las
consultas planteadas a un sistema documental, por ejemplo, la
adyacencia de palabras.

Abstract
The author presents the experience which took place in the Tate
Gallery Library and Archive with the CDS-ISIS system. The
works of art of the United Kingdom National Museum are
registered in a Clipper database, however those in charge of the
Library and the Museum decided to use the CDS-ISIS system
temporarily. The author mentions that although CDS-ISIS works
well in libraries, its application in an archive is more complex
due to the fact that these use archival levels and that the
majority of archives do not register their items as an unique
record. However the conclusions arrived at by the author are
quite satisfactory concerning the use of the CDS-ISIS system
in archives.

El autor presenta la experiencia realizada en el Tate Gallery
Library and Archive con el sistema CDS-ISIS. Las obras de
arte del Museo Nacional del Reino Unido estan registradas en
una base de datos Clipper, sin embargo los responsables de la
Biblioteca y Archivo decidieron aplicar en forma provisoria el
sistema CDS-ISIS. El autor menciona que si bien CDS-ISIS
funciona muy bien para bibliotecas, su aplicacion en un archivo
es mas compleja, debido a que los mismos utilizan niveles de
archivo y que la mayoria de los archivos no registran sus items
como unico registro. Sin embargo las conclusiones expuestas por
el autor son bastante satisfactorias en relacion al uso del sistema
CDS-ISIS en archivos.

Abstract
The development of on line help systems is a very important
element in attaining a Final -Product with a high Standard of
Excellence. This report deals with the development of an
informatic methodology which allows the display of lengthy and
varied Help Messages from within the Field Editor of a Data
Entry Worksheet. In depth studies of this approach will allow
the development of On Line Thesaurus Administration Systems
with Data Entry Services - ISISENT, thus solving standardization
problems and simplifying the aspects related to Quality Control in
regards to Data Retrieval.
Resumen
El desarrollo de Sistemas de Ayuda en linea es un elemento muy
importante para obtener un Producto Final de alto Nivel de
Excelencia. Este trabajo enfoca el desarrollo de una
metodologia informatica que permite desplegar Mensajes de Ayuda
extensos y variados desde el interior del Editor de Campos de
una Hoja de Trabajo. La profundizacion de este enfoque permitira
desarrollar Sistemas de Administracion de Tesauros en linea con
la Captura y Edicion de Datos - ISISENT, solucionando problemas
de normalizacion y facilitando aspectos vinculados con el Control
de Calidad asociado a toda tarea de Captura de Datos.

Abstract
This is a modular programme written in ISIS Pascal which offers
a user-friendly interface between the CDS-ISIS functions and the
user. The full programme works with display windows and key
options. It comes in two languages: Spanish and English.

Resumen
Se trata de un programa modular escrito en ISIS Pascal, cuyo
objetivo es el de ofrecer una interfaz amigable entre las
funciones de CDS-ISIS y el usuario. La totalidad del programa
GENIO esta desarrollado con ventanas desplegables y opciones de
teclas. Se presenta en dos idiomas: Castellano e Ingles.

UNIRED. A Network of Networks

Abstract
UNIRED is a network of networks established in the Argentine
Republic, made up by REDICSA - an information network on Social
Sciences -, CACOBE - a central catalogue of company libraries - and
NAPLAN - the national planification network-. The Network is a
cooperative and decentralized system which operates by means of
participating and coordinating centres. Since 1991 the networks
have organized meetings, workshops, courses and have taken
part in various national and worldwide activites. Both UNIRED
and the networks which work with it base their informatic
developments on the MicroISIS system.
Resumen
UNIRED es una red de redes establecida en la Republica
Argentina, formada por REDICSA - Red de Informacion sobre
Ciencias Sociales -, CACOBE -Catalogo Colectivo de Bibliotecas
Empresarias - y NAPLAN - Red Nacional de Planificacion -. La
Red es un sistema cooperativo y descentralizado que opera
mediante centros participantes y coordinadores. Desde 1991 las
redes organizan reuniones, talleres, cursos e intervienen
en diversas actividades nacionales y mundiales. Tanto UNIRED,
como las Redes que participan en ella, basan sus desarrollos
informaticos en el sistema MicroISIS.
