DISCUSSION GROUP TOPICS AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE

[Until about a week before the Annual Conference in Washington, AN2
will publish summaries of your discussion group topics and
presenters. We will also maintain a full listing on our web site,
http://www.ala.org/alcts/events/annualdg.html

Send announcements electronically only to kwhittlesey@ala.org. We
will publish them in groups, so you may not see yours right away. We
will edit for length and consistency if necessary. Do not use any
special formatting such as centering, all caps, etc. Your
announcement should look like those below.]

CCS CATALOGING NORMS
Saturday, June 27
9:30-11: a.m.

Topic: Please join us for an informal but lively discussion of
bibliographic holding standards. An explanation of NISO's work in the
area of holdings (Z39.71) will also take place. Representatives from
the NISO Holdings Statements for Bibliographic Items Committee and
Leopoldo Montoya, Librarian for Collections and Technical Services,
Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, MLA Standards Committee,
will take part.

An election for vice-chair/chair-elect will take place at the end of
the meeting. Nominations may be sent to Karen Davis or Martha Mason
at the email addresses listed below. Nominations will also be taken
from the floor. Nominees must be able to attend ALA conferences over
the next two years.

Suggested topics for future discussion group meetings would be
welcome.

Karen Davis, chair, kjdavis@gsu.edu
Martha Dinwiddie Mason, vice-chair/chair-elect, martha@tcl.sc.edu

CREATIVE IDEAS IN TECHNICAL SERVICES
Sunday, June 28
4:30-5:30 p.m.

Topics: Facilitated roundtable discussion on one of four timely
topics: 1. Coping with personnel issues resulting from
reorganization; 2. Electronic journals: acquisition, organization,
access; 3. Migrating to a new system; and 4. Continuing education and
training for all technical services staff

                ** CALL FOR FACILITATORS & RECORDERS **

The ALCTS Creative Ideas in Technical Services Discussion Group seeks
volunteers to either facilitate roundtable discussions or serve as
recorders for each roundtable. Here is an opportunity for ALA Annual
Conference attendees to be involved in an official capacity in an
energetic and stimulating discussion forum on timely and relevant
issues, and with a minimal time commitment. Ideas and insights will
be exchanged on the four topics listed. Facilitators will keep the
discussion relevant and will be provided with "seed" questions to
pose if the group needs focus. Recorders will take notes on the major
discussion threads and will submit the notes to the co-chairs at the
end of the discussion hour.

If you are interested in participating as either a facilitator or a
recorder, please reply at your earliest opportunity to either
co-chair listed below. Your assignment will be confirmed before the
conference, and detailed guidelines and information about the
discussion group will be provided to you in advance. We invite you to
take an active role in creative exploration of the issues.

The Creative Ideas in Technical Services Discussion Group is
participant-driven. The topics selected for the 1998 Midwinter
Meeting conference were the most-requested topics suggested at the
1997 Annual Conference. Participants are encouraged to suggest topics
for future discussion group sessions.

Pamela Moffett Padley, co-chair, padley@oxy.edu
Cheryl Kugler, co-chair, cckugler@uci.edu

PARS PHOTOGRAPHIC AND RECORDING MEDIA
Saturday, June 27
4:30-5:30 p.m.

The mission of this new discussion group is to provide a venue for
ALA members to discuss management issues, case studies, standards,
funding, and technological advances relating to photographic and
recording media collections. The discussion will focus on the
Pre-Conference "The Transformation of Recorded Sound: Preservation in
the Digital Age". Those interested in providing feedback or discussing
issues addressed during the conference are encouraged to attend.
Attendance at the pre-conference is not required. Gerald Gibson,
Library of Congress, will also provide updates on new preservation
standards and the previous UNESCO Meeting. Bring ideas for future
topics.

AACR2 TO BE INCLUDED IN CATALOGER'S DESKTOP

As previously announced an electronic version of AACR2 -- AACR2-e --
will be available this summer. The electronic version of the text
will now include all revisions through 1997. In addition, a new print
version of the text, based on this electronic file, will be available
later this summer. ALA Editions will license rights to the electronic
file to third party vendors and consortia so that catalogers can
access the rules electronically for use in their local environments.
For more information on AACR2-e consult the ALA web site at
http://www.ala.org/market/books/technical.html

On April 28, 1998, ALA Editions signed an agreement with the
Cataloging Distribution Service (CDS) of the Library of Congress to
incorporate the electronic file of the Anglo-American Cataloguing
Rules, Second Edition 1998 Revision --"AACR2-e"-- into LC's
Cataloger's Desktop, CDS's one-disc CD-ROM cataloging tool.

AACR2 will first appear in Cataloger's Desktop in the last quarter of
1998. CDS will ensure that AACR2 will work seamlessly with Cataloger's
Desktop. For the first time, catalogers will be able to look up a rule
in AACR2 and then immediately see how the Library of Congress
interprets that rule by consulting Library of Congress Rule
Interpretations (LCRIs) -- helping to ensure that catalogers don't
miss references to critical policy refinements. With AACR2 and the
LCRIs available on a single CD-ROM, cataloger's will be able to rely
on a single electronic source to get the definitive word on
English-language cataloging practice.

Because Cataloger's Desktop includes many cataloging tools, including
all USMARC formats, with AACR2 in the product catalogers will go
directly from locating rules to applying them in cataloging records.
Including AACR2 in Desktop will increase both the speed and accuracy
of cataloging.

In creating the AACR2 electronic file, ALA has made an essential
cataloging tool available in electronic form. The Second Edition
(1998 Revision) brings the AACR2 fully up to date for the first time
in 10 years. It will include all amendments, cumulated, through 1997.

Desktop's quarterly update schedule will keep all of the links from
AACR2 synchronized with the LCRIs and other critical cataloging tools
instantly with no additional effort on the part of the user.

JOIN ALA IN GUADALAJARA

For the second year, ALA and the Guadalajara International Book Fair
are partnering to provide support for American librarians to attend
the XIIth Guadalajara International Book Fair (Feria Internacional
del Libro -- FIL). The fair is November 28-December 6, 1998. FIL will
offer firsthand access to the latest publications in Spanish; an
exhibit of more than 75,000 titles; access to the complete catalogs
of more than 900 publishers from over 25 countries; networking
opportunities with 8000 book professionals; literary programming with
Latin American authors; and lectures on Mexican culture delivered by
experts in the field.

The Free Pass Program provides 3 days' lodging and registration at
the expense of FIL; and an ALA contribution of $100 toward the cost
of airfare. Free passes will be awarded to up to 200 American
librarians who work in the area of Spanish language acquisitions
and/or are working to build their Spanish language collection to
better serve their community and users. Deadline for application to
the FIL Free Pass Program is August 17, 1998.

Applicants to the Free Pass Program must be individual members of ALA
and must use the ALA-designated travel agency to be eligible for the
$100 travel contribution. ALA and FIL encourage applications from
school and public librarians, as well as academic librarians, to the
Free Pass Program. FIL will also provide free registration to all
American librarians interested in attending FIL, even if they are not
selected for the Free Pass Program.

For more information or to apply for the Free Pass Program, contact
